KANSAS CITY, Mo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 11, 2001 Commerce Bancshares, Inc. (Nasdaq:CBSH) announced record earnings of $2.76 per share in 2000 compared to $2.47 per share in 1999, an increase of 12%. Total earnings for 2000 amounted to $178.6 million, an increase of 7% compared to $166.2 million earned in 1999. For the year, return on equity totaled 16%, while the return on assets was 1.62%. For the fourth quarter, earnings per share also increased to $.72, compared to $.67 for the same period last year, an increase of 7%. Total earnings for the quarter amounted to $46.2 million, compared with $45.5 million in the third quarter of 2000 and $44.4 million last year.
